DESCRIPTION

It is summer 2015, I hear Leo Sidran’s album “Mucho Leo” for the first time. I fall in love with “Speak to me in Spanish” which reminds me furiously of the songs of Michael Franks that were the soundtrack of my Parisian adolescence at the end 70’s. A carefree and happy time at the Lycée Carnot in Paris where my friends and I shared the pleasure, as soon as we had two cents, to go to the Fnac located then avenue de Wagram once a month to buy “the 33 rpm” that we would listen to together until the end of the night, while remaking the World. This is how Michael Franks’ records and more particularly “The Art of Tea” and “Sleeping Gipsy” were for us magnificent discoveries of a brand new smooth jazz tinged with Brazilian and American sounds. With Michael Franks, we discovered the universes of Stan Getz, João Gilberto, Antônio Carlos Jobim and those of the American pop-jazz music scene such as Joe Sample, Larry Carlton, Wilton Felder, David Sanborn, Michael Brecker and others. The damage was done: we were definitely contaminated by good music. Galloping, incurable contamination that was responsible in the years that followed for other discoveries like Steely Dan, Bob James, The Crusaders, Al Jarreau, Ben Sidran and so many others. It is thus a little thanks to Michael Franks that our label has been collaborating with Ben and Leo Sidran for almost 15 years. If the affiliation between Michael Franks and Leo Sidran seemed obvious to me, this was not immediately the case for Leo who confessed to knowing him only little. So I proposed to Leo to work on a tribute to this cult Artist and sent him a long series of songs that seemed to me all inevitable and the decision was quickly taken to devote himself to this new project. The choice of titles is the fruit of a joint work and reflect the two periods West & East coast of Michael Franks. Thus was born “Cool School – [The Music of Michael Franks]”, an album recorded in France and the USA and which is also a meeting of exceptional musicians from both continents. And since we touched what seemed to me to be “sacred”, it seemed necessary to us that the one who was the cause, Michael Franks, should validate this project. This preliminary step allowed us not only to have his approval but also to record with him a particularly moving duo – The Cool School – which naturally became the title of this new album by Leo Sidran. This album is simply beautiful, remarkably produced by Leo Sidran, totally respectful of the work of Michael Franks while being perfectly modern. I am proud and happy to have contributed to its production and today its diffusion and thank this multitude of extraordinary musicians for having allowed the birth. Good listening to all.
