Whatever Happened to the Blues :The title of this album came first — I was thinking one day, whatever happened to all the great blues players and the simple, direct and profound art they practiced; was there still room for them on the planet, amidst all the hullabaloo and hustle? I called my old friend Phil Upchurch, the original bass player for Jimmy Reed and the Staple Singers, and told him my idea to do a modern blues survey and he was immediately excited by the prospect. We recorded this album all over the United States but in the end, it feels like we were sitting comfortably somewhere and digging the blues.
